Shiny Shiny

I just am popping in quickly today to show some of my silverware that I polished up the other day. I love how shiny it all is.  So so pretty and bright.

My mum would be proud!
Everything in her house was spotless and well cared for.
My place... not so much.

So pretty - can you believe it was like this before?

Although I like it both tarnished and shiny. It took me years before I was ready to polish this tea pot as I loved the old patina. Which way do you prefer your silver? Does anybody regularly polish silver these days or are we all too buys for these old fashioned household chores?  I have lovely memories of polishing silver with my mum on Saturday afternoons. Maybe it wasn't that often - just when we needed some pocket money or something!

I probably have polished it all wrong  - I used Silvo which I know a lot of people say is too strong. I bought all these pieces at markets over the years so I don't really mind the scratches and dings. If you have a good way of cleaning that's more gentle. I'd love to hear from you.

Have a lovely day.

  1. Hi Fiona,

I agree, silver looks lovely either way! Some of the tarnish gets that beautiful green-purple metallic sheen and it's hard to bring myself to rub it off! Who's to say which is nicer? I polish my silver about once a year, usually around Christmas. I have quite a lot of things like your little teapot, from older relatives, and use them as vases mainly. It's nice to put them to use and enjoy them every day. I'm trying to give up this silly notion of saving things 'for best'. We're good enough for 'best' now!

I do use Silvo, but not sure of any other option. Don't let it get on your galvanised sink though! (I learned this in our brand new house! Ouch!).

    Have a great day,
    Liz :)

  2. Maas polish is the absolutely best for silver, copper, brass, stainless steel and chrome. It's available online on Amazon among other sources. Gayle

  3. Hi Fiona, I love your blog and this is the first time I've commented. I clean my silver jewelry with alfoil and bicarb and I have found a link for cleaning bigger household pieces for you.

  5. patina definitely...I always worry that if you clean silver to much you will rub the pattern away....plus I love that oxidized look on silver jewellery too!

  6. I do like it both ways, the polished version is very pretty - but I am always attracted to the gravitas of a well-honed patina (as well as the low maintenance aspect).

Can't believe I got taken in by your faux blooms yesterday. I think your camera skills are getting too good!

  7. Hi Fiona - You can try lining your kitchen sink with aluminum foil, add 1/2 cup table salt and 1/2 cup baking soda. Fill your sink with hot water, dump your silver pieces and let stand for 30 minutes. I've tried it and it seems to work for most pieces. The tarnish transfers to the foil.
