Ikea DOMSJÖ Sink

After posting about my kitchen renovations here, a lot of people have commented on my ceramic farmhouse sink and asked for details.

It is the DOMSJÖ sink from IKEA.  The product code is 901.043.19.  It costs AUD$430 plus $10 each for the ATLANT strainers/plugs. It is not listed on the IKEA Australian or USA websites but it is available in the actual stores.  You will need to go into the actual IKEA stores to buy it.

and in situ at my place below:

I did find it on the Canadian IKEA website for $399.

Let me warn you though the sink is somewhat difficult to install.  But worth it for the look and functionality in the end so persevere with it. The sink runs the entire depth of the sink cabinet (in front of the window) and actually protrudes out in front, so instead of cutting a hole in the counter as you would for a traditional sink, you need to cut two separate counters for either side of the sink.  You can use the IKEA 36" AKURUM base cabinet but my cabinet maker made one himself for it. If you use the IKEA cabinet you simply don't install the top support braces and instead install two metal support braces which come with the DOMSJO sink.

The hardest part about installing this sink is making sure the cabinets and benchtop sit nicely with no gaps around it.  On the front edge of the benchtops next to the sink, you will need to cut a little notch, 18mm (left to right) (or 4/5" )  x 38mm (front to back). So it looks like a square has been cut out of the front edge of the bench.

I hope this all helps.

Do you have an IKEA Domsjo sink? leave a comment with your thoughts!

cheers
Fiona

  1. Hi Fiona

How have you found the sink? I'm thinking about installing this but am hesitant because I pretty much hand wash everything - heavy pots/pans included and I'm worried that it will stain/mark/chip the sink. We hardly ever use our dishwasher.

    thanks,
    Lilian

    1. Hi Lilian
I have had the sink for over a year now and I really love it. I think i'm going to have to do a new blog post on it as I get so many questions. It has worn very well. I use a clear plastic sink mat in it (from either Howard's Storage (around $16) or from cheaper discount stores. But my sink had only 1 tiny mark on it which is way less than a stainless steel sink would have after a year. I was heavy scanpan baking dishes in it all the time as well as the cast iron trivets form my massive stove. I just do this all very carefully. saying that I've never broken anything in my sink , I was petrified of doing this but it's been fine. and my kids (5 and 8) clear their own plates and put them in the sink all the time so it's been good that way.
the sink isnt stained at all and we make vegetable juice at least once a day and do if anything that would stain so i don't think that would be a problem at all ever,
hope that helps. its such a beautiful sink and nice to wash up at.
let me know what you decide

    2. Thanks for all that info Fiona - it really helps. My current stainless steel sink is looking worse for wear and the kitchen needs a reno soon and I really love the white belfast sinks - the IKEA one is the only one that's really within the budget though, so I've been tossing it up for a while. I love your kitchen and the furniture makeovers that you do!

    3. Glad to help out, Lilian, I think i'd actually choose the IKEA shape over a traditional more expensive Belfast even if money wasn't an issue. i seriously love it for so many reasons. Thanks so much for your nice comments. feel free to follow my blog or facebook page if you want to see more projects - probably not as exciting as the kitchen makeover though..LOL

  2. hello, I have bought this sink but i can not figure out how to install the atlant strainer plugs - the bolt seems to short?? How did you do it - my plumber can't figure it out either??? Thanks so much, stumped! Kelly

    1. hi kelly - hope you get this reply as I don't have your email address. The bolt that comes with the Atlant strainer is too short . it's for the metal sinks. Two longer bolts come in the sink packaging. it will be taped to the side of the sink or something like that. I actually threw these out by mistake so went back to Ikea and asked for more, they complained a little but but eventually gave me 2 more. it must happen all the time.
good luck finishing them. it took me ages to sort out as even the people in the sink department didn't know about the bolts. Another person overheard me asking and told me.

    2. THANK YOU!!!!! I found your post by searching "Atlant Domsjo" after running into the same problem. We haven't had running water in our kitchen for two weeks (countertops were delayed), and thanks to you, we might just fix that tonight!

  3. Hello,
I love your kitchen!! We are thinking of purchasing the DOMSJÖ sink. However, I am concerned because I have read somewhere it requires a 40mm thick benchtop. Can I ask how thick your benchtop is?

  4. Hey Fiona,
I love your kitchen. We are thinking of getting the DOMSJO sink however we are worried about the thickness of benchtop required. Can I ask you how think is your benchtop?

    1. hi Kel - our benchtop is 40mm thick but i'm pretty sure this makes NO DIFFERENCE. the IKEA Domsjo sink just sits on top of the benchtop so the thickness wouldn't matter. Are you installing over a fatkum Ikea cabinet or your own cabinet? the only thing you make have to do is cut a little away at the back of the fatkum cabinet. but i doubt this. and it's not as though that would be visible.

  5. Hi Fiona. Just found your blog and must say your kitchen is lovely. do you find the Domsjo big enough for big pots and baking trays? I have been tossing up between one of these and doing a traditional butler 60cm sink, with a small one in the pantry. But I love the unique look of the Domsjo with the ribbing.

  6. It is so weird that this sink is not listed on the websites. I have to drive 300km to my nearest Ikea so I am really hoping it will be there when I go up to buy my kitchen next month!

  7. Good Morning! I am the proud owner of a 36 inch Domsjo sink (which are virtually impossible to find in the Greater Toronto Area right now due to their popularity). I am wondering how much the apron protrudes out from the cabinet---I had a custom kitchen installed yesterday and the sink's apron might impede my ability to open the cutlery drawer, which is at a 90 degree angle or "U" to my sink....I don't want to start installing without that crucial and exact measurement---I know that it is 27 inches wide and about 36 inches long--the length is ok, I just need the measurement of the apron part and how far it goes beyond the cut out in the cupboard...does that make sense? Pulling the sink out of the box wont help as it won't be exact, exact when I place it in the empty space (the cabinet is not cut out yet). I am extremely sleep-deprived with the renovation so sorry for the rambling question!! Love your kitchen!!! Any help on this would be appreciated!

    1. Hi just work out the difference between your bench depth and the sink depth. The sink measurements will be on the ikea website. Hope that helps. It's an inch or two

  8. Did you have a problem with the strainers not connecting smoothly in the bolts? They fit in the small bolts like butter but the long required bolts are very tight. I had to use players to get it out! The one side of the sink the strainer won't go in at all. So frustrating!

    1. I didnt have any problem at all. they do give you the imperial and metric bolts - are you using the correct ones?

  9. OH DO tell where you found that LOVELY faucet!!! I have had a hard hunt and THIS is what I had hoped to find. SO soon, if you could! In the middle of installing!

  10. Can we get away by not cutting the notch (18mm) but instead cut the benchtop straight down i.e. shorten the benchtops' length on either side by 18mm overall? just wanting to avoid cutting the notches on my stone benchtop.
