A Different Sort of Painting

Today was the start of the watercolour painting class my husband bought me for Christmas.  The course is though Art Est which is a lovely art school very nearby.  The Mastering Watercolours class run by Susie Murphie is currently sold out with a waiting list, so I'm happy I've got an organised husband who booked me in early.   I've got some of Susie's work at the bottom of this post.

It's nearly 11 years since I've painted any watercolours and before this class I've only done a one week course in London so don't expect too much. I just thought it would be interesting to see any improvement over the next 8 Wednesdays.

Setting up (I love Instagram)

Adding depth and contrast

some other little studies.  trying to be a bit more free flowing below.

Below is my attempt on the left and Susie's on the right.
I've overworked it....early days though....

I found today quite challenging. Being an engineer originally, I'm used to being quite exact and detailed...and water colour is all about letting it flow.  It's very good brain training as well as artistic training.

And below is some of Susie's work.
Check out her website for more.

She's amazing isn't she!

So it's back to furniture painting tomorrow. I sold two pieces today. All in all a very enjoyable day!

Does anyone else paint watercolours?

  1. How lovely! I love how so much can be said with only a few strokes of the paintbrush when you use watercolour. It's almost what you leave out that helps define the picture. Lucky you to be doing a course. Enjoy!
